I prefer words with commonly used letters in English, like TRAIN, while a friend of mine swears by TRAIL. Although some players opt for the term ROATE, I prefer using words that feel familiar.
What is Wordle?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re likely familiar with how Wordle works. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, with the game providing feedback on which letters are in the word and whether they are in the correct position. The New York Times acquired the game from creator Josh Wardle in 2022 for a substantial sum. Wardle originally designed the game for his partner, who helped narrow down the 12,000 five-letter words in English to just 2,500, forming the game’s answer database. Interestingly, Wardle’s name is a playful nod to the word “word.”
According to a Times spokesperson, the first Wordle appeared on June 19, 2021, and the game celebrated its 1,000th word on March 15. Curious about that milestone word? It was ERUPT—an apt word, as in “Dad will erupt if the Wordle is so tough he loses his streak.”
